Action / Use
ACTION: Herbicide.
USE: Postemergence weed control in barley, field corn, popcorn, flax, garlic, mint, oats, onions, rye, seedling alfalfa, sorghum, triticale, wheat, forage grasses, grass for sod and seed protection, and alfalfa in CRP.
PREMIX PARTNERS: Atrazine; Benazolin; Bentazone; 2,4-D; Dicamba; Diflufenican; Ethofumesate; Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl; Fluroxypyr; Ioxynil; Isoproturon; MCPA; Mecoprop; Mecoprop-P; Propanil; Pyrasulfotole; Terbuthylazine; Thiencarbazone-methyl.

Identification

COMMON NAME: Bromoxynil (ANSI, ISO, BSI, WSSA); bromoxynil heptanoate; bromoxynil octanoate.

Chemistry

COMPOSITION: Octanoate: 2,6-dibromo-4-cyanophenyl octanoate (1).
PROPERTIES: Phenol: White odorless solid. Melting point 194-195℃. Octanoate: Clear, amber waxy solid, characteristic odor. Melting point 45-46℃. Vapor pressure 0.1 mm/Hg (20℃). Readily hydrolized to bromoxynil at pH >9. Solubility: Pure, 25℃: acetone 170 g/l; methanol 90 g/l. Octanoate, 20-25℃: acetone, ethanol 100 g/l; benzene, xylene 700 g/l; chloroform, dichloromethane 800 g/l; cyclohexanone 550 g/l.

Environmental Guidelines

HAZARDS: Pure: Fish: LC50 0.05 mg/l (rainbow trout). Bee: Nontoxic.
WATER SOLUBILITY: Pure, 25℃: 130 mg/l. Octanoate: Virtually insoluble.

TOXICITY: Tech (Rat): Oral LD50 190 mg/kg; Dermal >2000 mg/kg. (Rabbit): Dermal 3660 mg/kg; mild skin, eye irritation. Form (octanoate) (Rat): Oral LD50 365 mg/kg; Dermal >2000 mg/kg. (Rabbit): Dermal 1675 mg/kg. Buctril* (Rat): Oral LD50 779 mg/kg.
HANDLING/STORAGE CAUTIONS: Handle carefully. Avoid contact with fish and wildlife. Do not use or store near heat or open flame. Store at temperatures above 3℃. If allowed to freeze, remix before using. Do not contaminate water, food, or feed by storage or disposal of this chemical.
